BACKGROUND:

In 1989, the Legislature created the Department of Health as a separate department of state government.  The primary responsibilities of the department are to preserve public health, monitor health care costs, and provide general oversight and planning for the state's activities as they relate to the health of Washington residents.

Many references in statute are now incorrect as a result of the creation of the Department of Health.  The Statute Law Committee and the Department of Health are requesting that such internal references be changed to reflect the 1989 law.
