     AN ACT Relating to information on prescription drugs; and adding a new section to chapter 18.64 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 18.64 RCW to read as follows:

     (1) The legislature finds that the potent legend drugs currently available for prescribing and dispensing may have adverse effects in addition to their beneficial effects.  The legislature further finds that patients are in need of sufficient information to assure that they are taking prescribed drugs in the proper manner to assure that the treatment achieves its desired effect and that any adverse or undesirable drug interactions are minimized or eliminated.  This information should be supplied by the practitioner and also the dispenser.

     (2) Except when the practitioner has determined that the patient is not to receive specified information regarding the medication, any practitioner who dispenses a legend drug to a patient, after consulting the patient profile, shall inform the patient orally or in writing of any information necessary to assure the proper utilization of the medication.
