Read first time 01/20/92.  Providing funds for the observance of the state's maritime bicentennial.

     AN ACT Relating to Washington state history; creating new sections; and making an appropriation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.      The legislature finds that the two hundredth anniversary of the explorations of American, British, and Hispanic voyagers in the Northeast Pacific, especially the new-found Euro-American awareness of the Columbia river and Puget Sound in 1792, is a suitable occasion to bring concentrated attention to the principles of multiculturalism, Washington-British Columbia-Oregon's common maritime and riverine history, and the origins and continuities of Pacific Rim trade and international exchange.

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.      The Washington state historical society, as an agency dedicated to public historical education, having been previously assigned the responsibility for developing a plan for the observance of the maritime bicentennial, is responsible for programs and services which may include:

     (1) Exhibits, publications, historic markers, festivals, conferences, reenactments, and maritime and native American crafts demonstrations;

     (2) Grants to maritime organizations and museums for capital projects and operations; and

     (3) Joint tourism promotions on the maritime and riverine themes in conjunction with British Columbia and Oregon.

     NEW SECTION.  Sec. 3.      The sum of two hundred fifty-five thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1993, from the general fund to the Washington state historical society for the purposes of section 2 of this act.
