Requiring maintenance staff increases proportional to net increases in higher learning institution space.


     AN ACT Relating to higher education facilities; and amending RCW 28B.80.520.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

     Sec. 1.  RCW 28B.80.520 and 1989 1st ex.s. c 7 s 9 are each amended to read as follows:

     (1) Before approving any institutional request to acquire facilities in an area assigned in RCW 28B.45.020 through 28B.45.060, the higher education coordinating board shall ensure that creative and cost-effective methods of serving the needs of each assigned area are considered, including but not limited to:

     (((1))) (a) Exploring the possibility of time-sharing existing college or university facilities for instructional and administrative purposes;

     (((2))) (b) Using rented facilities; and

     (((3))) (c) Utilizing telecommunication technology.

     (2) The opening of new or remodeled facilities where there has been a net increase in space shall be prohibited until the college or university increases its maintenance staff in proportion to the net increase in that institution's total square footage of occupied facilities.
