BACKGROUND:

 

Under current law, the Superintendent of Public Instruction (SPI) may pay for substitutes for certificated employees when a certificated employee is requested by the SPI or the State Board of Education to serve on a committee formed for the purpose of furthering education within the state or the school district, and it is necessary to obtain a substitute to perform the certificated employee's duties.  No similar provision is available for classified employees.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The Superintendent of Public Instruction may pay for substitutes for classified employees when a classified employee is requested by the SPI or the State Board of Education to serve on a committee formed for the purpose of furthering education within the state or the school district, and it is necessary to obtain a substitute to perform the classified employee's duties.

TESTIMONY FOR:

 

This is an equity issue.  All employees, both classified and certificated, should be able to receive substitute costs.
