BACKGROUND:

 

The Washington State Commission for Efficiency and Accountability in Government was established on a temporary basis by the Legislature in 1987.  The commission was re-authorized by the Legislature in 1991.

 

The purpose of the commission is to conduct program reviews of state agencies and programs and make recommendations for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of government programs.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The commission is directed to contract with private firms to conduct performance audits of fourteen state agencies between 1994 and 1997.

 

The agencies to be audited in 1994 are the Department of Labor and Industries, the Department of Wildlife, and the State Lottery Commission.

 

In 1995, audits will be performed on the Departments of General Administration, Information Services, Licensing, and Revenue.

 

In 1996, the Departments of Ecology and Employment Security and the Gambling Commission and Liquor Control Board will undergo performance audits.

 

In 1997, audits will be performed on the office of Insurance Commissioner, State Investment Board, and the office of State Treasurer.

 

The cost of the audits are borne by the agency being audited.
