Using edible meat from deer and elk killed on county roads.

AN ACT Relating to the use of deer and elk killed by vehicles on county roads; adding a new section to chapter 77.12 RCW; and creating a new section.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  The legislature finds that hundreds of deer and elk are killed by vehicles each year on county roads in Washington state.  The legislature further finds that there are insufficient means for ensuring that edible meat from these animals is used, and that there is no agency responsible for removing dead deer and elk from county roadways.  The legislature declares that it is in the interest of the citizens of the state to ensure that these animals be removed and used to the extent possible.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  A new section is added to chapter 77.12 RCW to read as follows:

The department of wildlife shall remove and dispose of dead deer and elk from county roadways.  Before disposal, the department shall make an effort to first offer the animal to the department of corrections or other institutions needing food.  If the animal is not taken by such institution, the department may offer the animal to the landowner owning property adjacent to the location where the animal was found on the county road, and may, if the landowner is willing to take the animal, issue a permit to do so, or the department shall dispose of the animal in another manner.
