Requiring an oath of office for state legislators.


          AN ACT Relating to oaths of office; and adding a new section to chapter 44.04 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 44.04 RCW to read as follows:

          Each person elected or appointed to the office of a member of the state legislature shall take and subscribe to an oath of office upon first assuming office for any elective or appointed term for the office.  The oath shall be substantially as follows:  "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution and laws of the state of Washington, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office entrusted to me to the best of my ability."  A copy of the oath shall be filed with the secretary of state.
