Improving the teaching of geography.

          AN ACT Relating to improving the teaching of geography; adding new sections to chapter 28A.300 RCW; creating a new section; and making an appropriation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  The legislature finds that Washington's students will live and work in an increasingly interdependent world.  The legislature also finds that Washington's students need to have an understanding and appreciation on the culture, history, economy, government, and geography of the peoples of other lands.  In addition, the legislature finds that the state can best enrich and supplement the geography curriculum of students in the common schools and community and technical colleges by facilitating collaborative relationships among educators and nonprofit organizations dedicated to educational reform and curricular enrichment.

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  A new section is added to chapter 28A.300 RCW to read as follows:

          The Washington geographic reform alliance program is established.  The program shall be administered by the superintendent of public instruction.  The purposes of the program include, but are not limited to:

          (1) Providing support to teachers who seek innovative methods to improve the teaching of geography in the state's public schools;

          (2) Providing small grants to teachers who are working collaboratively to enrich geography curricula in the public schools; and

          (3) Providing assistance to educators who are redesigning geography curricula for the common schools and community and technical colleges.

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 3.  A new section is added to chapter 28A.300 RCW to read as follows:

          If funding is available, the superintendent of public instruction shall, in collaboration with educators and representatives of the national geographic society's educational alliance program:

          (1) Select persons to coordinate efforts to improve the teaching of geography in the public schools;

          (2) Provide small grants to teachers who seek innovative ways to improve the teaching of geography in the public schools; and

          (3) Provide assistance to educators who are redesigning geography curricula for students in the state's public schools and community and technical colleges.

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 4.  The sum of seventy-five thousand  dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1995, from the general fund to the office of the superintendent of public instruction for the purposes of this act.
