                              _______________________________________________

State of Washington                              53rd Legislature                             1993 Regular Session

By Representatives Wineberry, Locke, Jacobsen and Anderson

Read first time 03/11/93.  Referred to Committee on Capital Budget.

Appropriating funds for the Seattle Vocational Institute.

AN ACT Relating to funding for the Seattle Vocational Institute; creating a new section; and making an appropriation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  Seattle Vocational Institute is a comprehensive work force training center operating as part of the Seattle Community College.  It has been mandated by the legislature to serve Seattle area inner-city neighborhoods and to provide occupational, basic skills, English as a second language, apprenticeship preparation, and literacy education opportunities to economically disadvantaged populations.  This mandate is achieved primarily through open-entry, open-exit, short-term, competency-based job training programs.

The building which Seattle Vocational Institute occupies is in need of repairs to prevent further deterioration and remodeling for efficient operation of education training programs.  A study of alternative physical facilities for the Seattle Vocational Institute,  mandated by the legislature, has found that the most cost-effective option is renovation of the existing facility.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  The sum of eight million two hundred twenty-eight thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1995, from the state building construction account to the state board for community and technical colleges for renovation of the Seattle Vocational Institute building.
