          _______________________________________________

State of Washington      53rd Legislature     1994 Regular Session

By Representatives Schmidt, Zellinsky, Wood, Kremen and J. Kohl

Read first time 01/19/94.  Referred to Committee on Transportation.

Encouraging alternative fuel in taxicabs.

AN ACT Relating to alternative fuel use by taxicabs; and adding a new section to chapter 81.72 RCW.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 81.72 RCW to read as follows:

The legislature recognizes that the use of alternative fuels in motor vehicles contributes to improved air quality.  Taxicab companies with fleets using alternative fuels will help the state meet its clean air goals by operating cleaner burning vehicles and providing, or supporting the development of, refueling stations for alternative fuels.  The development of these refueling stations may encourage greater use of alternative fuels by publicly and privately owned vehicles, and help state and local governments meet federal, state, and local mandates requiring the use of alternative fuels for vehicle fleets.  Therefore, political subdivisions that regulate taxicab transportation are encouraged to include among their licensees, when practicable, taxicab owners who operate vehicles using alternative fuels.
