Providing medical aid benefits coverage for school district-sponsored work-based learning experiences.



    AN ACT Relating to school district-sponsored, nonpaid, work-based learning experiences; and adding a new section to chapter 51.12 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 51.12 RCW to read as follows:

    (1) A person enrolled and participating in a school district-sponsored, nonpaid, work-based learning experience, shall be considered a "volunteer" as provided in RCW 51.12.035 and is subject to the applicable provisions of this title for the time spent in actual attendance at the nonpaid work-based experience.

    (2) A person who has earned wages for the time spent in participating in a school district-sponsored, work-based learning experience, is no longer considered a "volunteer."

    (3) The superintendent of public instruction shall create a task force composed of an equal representation of business, labor, parents, and teachers to develop a definition of nonpaid, work-based learning experience.
