Background:  A Task Force on Archaeology and Historic Preservation was created in 1999 for the purpose of developing a single recommendation for the location of the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation within state government.  An appropriation of $20,000 was made to the Office of Secretary of State for funding of the task force=s activities.  The office currently is located within the local government division of the Department of Community, Trade, and Economic Development.  The task force=s report to the Legislature and the Governor was to have been completed by January 1, 2000.  The report has not been completed.

 

Summary of Bill:  The date by which the task force must report to the Legislature and the Governor is December 31, 2000.

 

Appropriation:  None.

 

Fiscal Note:  Not requested.

 

Effective Date:  Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.

 

Testimony For:  The historic preservation officer did not take office until late in the process and more time is needed to do a good job on the report.
