SENATE BILL REPORT

                   SB 6392

                    As of January 31, 2000

Title:  An act relating to the state patrol academy.

Brief Description:  Requiring initial four‑year service terms for the state patrol.

Sponsors:  Senators Stevens, Long, Swecker, Hochstatter, Morton, Rossi, Johnson, Honeyford, Hale and Benton.

Brief History:

Committee Activity:  Transportation:  2/1/2000.

SENATE COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION

Staff:  Greg Doss (786-7341)

Background:  Shortly after graduating from the State Patrol Academy, some officers have left the agency to accept employment in local law enforcement, or within agencies located in other states.  Such attrition causes the Washington State Patrol to loose its financial investment in the officer.

Summary of Bill:  Upon graduating from the State Patrol Academy, officers must serve a minimum of four years with the Washington State Patrol.  Cadets wishing to leave the academy after 50 percent of their training must repay the cost of that training.

Appropriation:  None.

Fiscal Note:  Available.

Effective Date:  Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
