SENATE BILL REPORT

SB 5377

As Passed Senate, March 10, 2001

Title:  An act relating to marking the gross weight on certain vehicles.

Brief Description:  Marking the gross weight on certain vehicles.

Sponsors:  Senators Gardner, Horn and Haugen.

Brief History:

Committee Activity:  Transportation:  2/7/01, 2/19/01 [DP].

Passed Senate:  3/10/01, 47-0.

SENATE COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION

Majority Report:  Do pass.

Signed by Senators Haugen, Chair; Gardner, Vice Chair; Benton, Eide, Finkbeiner, Horn, Jacobsen, Johnson, Kastama, McAuliffe, Oke, Prentice, T. Sheldon, Shin and Swecker.

Staff:  Dean Carlson (786‑7305)

Background:  Motor trucks, truck tractors, and tractors with a licensed gross weight in excess of 10,000 pounds must have the maximum gross weight or combination weight for which they are licensed placed on the outside of the vehicle in a conspicuous place.

Summary of Bill:  The requirement for motor trucks, truck tractors and tractors to have their licensed gross weight placed on the outside of the vehicle is eliminated.

Appropriation: None

Fiscal Note:  Not requested.

Effective Date:  Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.

Testimony For:  This is meaningless and misleading information.  The licensed weight is what matters and law enforcement has to look at the license papers to determine that.  This provision has outlived its usefulness.  This can be costly for some truckers.

Testimony Against:  None.

Testified:  Senator Gardner, prime sponsor; Larry Pursley, Washington Trucking Association.
