Background:  Electrical work is highly regulated in Washington State.  Generally, with some exceptions, electrical work must be performed by contractors who are registered with the state, and those performing electrical construction work must hold a certificate of competency.

Many of the exemptions to these requirements pertain to electrical work performed by an owner on his or her own property.

Summary of Bill:  Employees and owners of residential property companies, operated by licensed real estate brokers, are exempt from requirements of contractor licensing and competency certificates when performing certain specific types of electrical work on the owner's residential property.

The types of permissible electrical work are listed in detail, and cannot include work on equipment and circuits over 240 volts, 60 amps, nor can it include work on electrical conductors.

Appropriation:  None.

Fiscal Note:  Not requested.

Effective Date:  Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
