HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.4687, by Representatives Liias and Roberts

     WHEREAS, Damascus Purnell is a junior from Mariner High School in Everett, Washington; and
     WHEREAS, Purnell is a student from Washington whose logo was chosen in a highly competitive national contest; and
     WHEREAS, Purnell participated in a graphic arts classroom assignment by submitting a logo proposal to a national organization in honor of the Civil Conservation Corps; and
     WHEREAS, The Civil Conservation Corps was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt with the purpose of reforestation in all fifty states and the employment of thousands of unemployed men from 1933 to 1942; and
     WHEREAS, The Civil Conservation Corps had forty-three work camps in Washington state from 1933 to 1942; and
     WHEREAS, More than fifty thousand Washingtonians were enrolled in the Civil Conservation Corps' workforce; and
     WHEREAS, The Civil Conservation Corps improved millions of acres of federal and state lands and parks in Washington and across the United States; and
     WHEREAS, Purnell's work recognizes the importance of the Civil Conservation Corps' contribution to both Washington state and the nation and the dedication of the young men enrolled in the Civil Conservation Corps to the agency's mission; and
     WHEREAS, The legacy of the Civil Conservation Corps and the significance of that legacy to the state of Washington is commemorated by Purnell's logo; and
     WHEREAS, Purnell's logo was chosen by a twelve-member Civil Conservation Corps historical board located on the East Coast of the United States; and
     WHEREAS, Purnell's logo consists of the Civil Conservation Corps' name, a deciduous tree, and the words "A message of commitment and change"; and
     WHEREAS, Purnell's logo was chosen to be included in 2008 literature promoting the nation's parks and commemorating the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Civil Conservation Corps' creation;
     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize Damascus Purnell for his great contribution to honoring the Civil Conservation Corps and his admirable representation of Washington state, and applaud his distinguished achievement in the area of graphic arts.
