Brief Summary of Bill

  • Farm vehicle trip permits are valid for 30 days commencing with the first day of use.

Background:

Owners of farm vehicles where the gross vehicle weight for a combination vehicle that does not exceed 80,000 pounds or 40,000 pounds for a single unit vehicle may operate these vehicles using a trip permit. Each farm vehicle trip permit is authorized for the period that is remaining in a calendar month. No more than four permits are allowed for any one vehicle in any 12-month period. The fee for each farm permit is $6.25 and is sold by the Department of Licensing's agents or subagents.

Commercial vehicles when licensed to a total gross weight of 80,000 pounds or a three-or-more axle single vehicle has been licensed to a total weight gross weight of 40,000 pounds, a temporary tonnage permit to haul loads in excess of these limits may be issued. This permit is valid for periods of not less than five days at $2.80 per day for each 2,000 pounds or fraction there of. The fee for temporary additional tonnage permits is collected by the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Summary of Bill:

The bill authorizes a farm trip permit and the temporary additional commercial vehicle tonnage permit to be valid for 30 days starting with day of first use.

EFFECT OF SENATE AMENDMENT(S):

Clarifies the length of time to use a farm vehicle trip permit is for thirty consecutive calendar days, commencing with the day of first use.

Removes the proposed time from thirty days back to current law for the time period for a temporary additional tonnage permit for commercial vehicles. Presently commercial vehicle permits to haul additional weight is for a period of not less than five days at two dollars and eight cents per day for each two thousand pounds additional weight.
