Under current law, the Washington State Transportation Commission (Commission) is responsible for naming state transportation facilities. An entity or person requesting that a facility be named or renamed must provide sufficient evidence indicating community support and acceptance of the proposal.

The Commission consults with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) before taking final action to name or rename a state transportation facility. After the Commission takes action to name or rename a facility, the WSDOT designs and installs the appropriate signs.

Summary of Bill:

The Commission is asked to name State Route 502 the "Battle Ground Highway." The Commission is also asked to name a segment of State Route 503 the "Lewisville Highway." The section of State Route 503 to be named is from the junction of State Route 500 at Orchards to the junction of State Route 502 and northerly to Amboy.

Appropriation: None.

Fiscal Note: Not requested.

Staff Summary of Public Testimony:

(In support) This bill is important to residents of southwest Washington. State Route 503 connects the City of Vancouver to the rural parts of the county. Different sections of this road have been named different things; there are seven different names for this road. People call this the Battle Ground Highway and we simply want to make it official. There is a letter of support from the Chamber of Commerce.

(Opposed) None.

Persons Testifying: Mike Ciraulo and Dennis Osborn, City of Battle Ground.

Persons Signed In To Testify But Not Testifying: None.
