SENATE COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION

Staff: Amanda Cecil (786-7429)

Background: State Route (SR) 9 runs south from Sumas, Washington, to Snohomish County where it crosses the Snohomish River.

Summary of Bill: The Washington State Department of Transportation is directed to begin the environmental planning process, and to prepare a final design, for the SR 9 Snohomish River Bridge Replacement Project. Funding is provided for these purposes.

Appropriation: $5,560,000 from the Motor Vehicle Account.

Fiscal Note: Not requested.

Committee/Commission/Task Force Created: No.

Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.

Staff Summary of Public Testimony: PRO: Snohomish and the surrounding areas are growing and SR 9 serves as a vital arterial for the area. The SR 9 Snohomish River bridge is the same size it was in the 1950s and no longer meets the needs of the area. It causes a bottle neck that frustrates drivers and moves traffic onto city streets. The bridge is also dangerous and has been the site of many accidents.

Persons Testifying: PRO: John Turner, Kirk Williams, Snohomish Chamber.
