Brief Description: Requiring the use of headlights when windshield wipers are used.

Brief Summary of Bill

  • Requires drivers to display lighted headlights when the vehicle's windshield wipers are in use due to snow, rain, fog, or other sight-limiting conditions, in addition to existing requirements regarding the use of headlights.

Background:

Drivers must display their vehicle's headlights, when driving upon a highway within Washington, at any time from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise. Headlights must also be displayed during periods of insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions, when persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly discernible at a distance of 1,000 feet ahead.

Summary of Bill:

In addition to existing requirements regarding the use of headlights, drivers must display lighted headlights when the vehicle's windshield wipers are in use due to snow, rain, fog, or other sight-limiting conditions.

Appropriation: None.

Fiscal Note: Not requested.

Effective Date: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the session in which the bill is passed.
