Background: According to the National Institutes of Health, patients with type 1 diabetes carry a high risk of developing eating disorders based on factors including restricted diets and a focus on weight control. Insulin omission for weight control has been reported in 11 to 15 percent of adolescents, and 30 to 39 percent of adults living with diabetes. The practice can lead to early onset of serious diabetes complications such as blindness, amputations, or death.
Summary of Bill: By December 1, 2020, the Department of Health must provide a report to the Legislature concerning eating disorders among individuals living with diabetes and make it available to the public on its website. The report must address:
the prevalence of eating disorders among individuals in Washington living with diabetes;
the risks associated with disordered eating for people with diabetes;
insulin usage and omission habits among the affected population;
available screening tools for providers; and
available treatment options.

Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
Staff Summary of Public Testimony: PRO: Many providers are not aware of diabulimia or how to treat it but it affects many young women who are managing their type 1 diabetes and there are dangerous consequences.
