AN ACT Relating to motor vehicle safety equipment; and adding a new section to chapter 43.19 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 43.19 RCW to read as follows:

          Commencing with model year 1987, no passenger car or light truck may be purchased by the state under its annual vehicle contract that is not equipped with a complete passive protection system, including seat belts and the system commonly known as "air bags," if available, in compliance with the automatic occupant restraint requirements of FMVSS 208, as amended July 17, 1984, as set forth in 49 C.F.R. 571.208.

          For the purpose of this section, "light truck" means any motor truck rated by the manufacturer as three-quarter ton or less.
