AN ACT Relating to requiring the construction of public buildings from wood; adding a new section to chapter 39.24 RCW; and creating a new section.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     The legislature recognizes the crisis in the state's economy and especially in the timber and wood products industry.  In response to the urgent necessity, the legislature intends that public works funds be used in a manner promoting both increased economic activity and greater employment in the timber and wood products industry.  It is this state's policy to prefer wood and wood products over other construction and building materials.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  A new section is added to chapter 39.24 RCW to read as follows:

All public works contracts entered into by the state or a municipality shall require that wood and wood products be used to the maximum extent permitted by the state building code as provided in chapter 19.27 RCW.  Whenever wood and wood products are interchangeable with other materials under the state building code, the wood and wood products shall be used.
