AN ACT Relating to an alcohol awareness program; creating a new section; and making an appropriation.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     There is established an alcohol awareness pilot program aimed at persons between fifteen and twenty-five years of age.  Funds appropriated by the legislature for this purpose shall be dedicated exclusively to the implementation and operation of an alcohol awareness pilot program administered by the bureau of alcohol and substance abuse of the department of social and health services under the following conditions:  (1) The pilot program shall be performed under a performance-based contract with facilities licensed under chapter 71.12 RCW or approved treatment facilities under chapter 70.96A RCW; (2) the alcohol awareness pilot program shall be directed towards youth of teenage driver ages up to young adults under twenty-five years of age;  (3) the program shall include but not be limited to presentations and activities and educational curricula designed to illustrate the dangers of alcohol misuse and the effects and impairments on the body and to prevent drunk driving; and (4) the superintendent of public instruction, local school districts, institutions of higher education, and vocational-technical institutions shall cooperate with the bureau of alcohol and substance abuse of the department of social and health services in the activities to promote alcohol awareness.  In addition to the funds provided under this section, the department of social and health services may solicit and accept gifts and grants for the purposes of this program.  The department shall present the results of the program to the legislature no later than January 1, 1987.

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.     There is appropriated from the general fund to the department of social and health services for the biennium ending June 30, 1987, the sum of two hundred fifty thousand dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary, to carry out the purposes of this act.
