AN ACT Relating to historic preservation; and adding a new section to chapter 43.82 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 43.82 RCW to read as follows:

          (1) Prior to the purchase, lease, or rent of space for state agency purposes, the director of general administration shall request the state historic preservation officer to identify existing  properties within the geographical area where the space is needed, which:

          (a) Are listed or eligible to be listed in the national or state register of historic places; and

          (b) May be suitable, either in the existing condition or through repair or alteration, for such purposes.

          The state historic preservation officer shall provide the requested information within thirty days.

          (2) The director shall review and give preference to the properties identified by the state historic preservation officer unless use of the space would not be feasible and prudent compared with available alternatives.   If the director purchases, leases, or rents a property not among those identified by the state historic preservation officer pursuant to this section, written justification shall be submitted to the state historic preservation officer.

          (3) The state historic preservation officer shall compile an annual report on this program for presentation to the governor and the legislature.
