AN ACT Relating to education; and adding a new section to chapter 28A.58 RCW.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 28A.58 RCW to read as follows:

Public schools shall provide assistance to children in need of blood monitoring as provided in this section.

          (1) The child or the child's parents shall provide the school administrator with a written order from a licensed physician stating that the child cannot attend public school during normal operating hours without a blood sugar test.  The physician's order shall describe the test to be done, recommendations for actions in light of certain test results, and a statement that actions taken by the school are at the physician's orders and are not the independent unauthorized practice of medicine.

          (2) The child and the child's parents shall request, in writing, that the test described in subsection (1) of this section be conducted by the school.

          (3) The child shall provide all necessary materials and substances for testing.

          (4) The child or the child's parents shall provide instruction in testing procedures to school personnel as may be designated by the school administrator.

          (5) The child shall be given the results of the tests and be told what course of action was recommended by the physician in light of the results.

          (6) If the test results indicate some action may be necessary, the child's parents shall be contacted at the telephone number provided by them for such purpose.
