WHEREAS, The United States shipbuilding and ship repair industry is a vital element in the national defense capabilities of the United States; and

          WHEREAS, Since 1981, some twenty shipyards have ceased operations, and these closures have meant a loss of some forty thousand jobs and created economic hardship for these individuals and their communities; and

          WHEREAS, The American shipbuilding industry's capabilities and facilities are rapidly falling behind the rest of the world; and

          WHEREAS, The recognition of the vital importance of this industry to our local, state, and national governments is long overdue, and drastic measures are needed now to revive this industry;

          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the Senate of the state of Washington, the House of Representatives concurring, That the United States shipbuilding and ship repair industry be recognized for the vital importance it has to the economic strength of this country; and

          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That each member of Congress from the state of Washington do everything possible to devise a program to assist the shipbuilding and ship repair industry in this country; and

          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be immediately transmitted to each member of Congress from the state of Washington.
