BACKGROUND:

Certain nonresident students are exempt from paying the nonresident differential on tuition and fees.  These students include teaching and research assistants working for an academic department for twenty or more hours a week.  Also included are employees of state institutions of higher education living in the state who have at least a half time appointment.  The spouse and dependent children of those institutional employees are also exempt from the differential.

Active duty military personnel stationed in the state, and their spouses and dependent children are exempt from paying nonresident tuition and fee rates.  Also exempt are immigrant refugees, with their spouses and dependent children, if the refugee is on parole status, or has a immigrant visa, or if the refugee has applied for United States citizenship.

SUMMARY:

A full-time employee of state or local government in Washington is exempt from paying nonresident tuition and fee rates if the employee's tuition is paid by his or her employer, or if the course is approved by his or her employer as required for the job.
