BACKGROUND:

 

In 1986, the Legislature created the Washington Awards for Excellence in Education Program to recognize teachers, principals, superintendents, and school boards across the state for their contribution, leadership, and commitment to education. The teachers and principals could elect to receive a grant of $1,000 or a tuition waiver and stipend of $1,000.  There was no provision to allow the award to be given to school administrators who are not principals or superintendents.

 

SUMMARY:

 

SUBSTITUTE BILL:  The three Washington Awards for Excellence in Education Programs, which are available in each congressional district, may be given to principals or administrators rather than being limited to three principals.

 

SUBSTITUTE BILL COMPARED TO ORIGINAL:  Educational staff associates are included as personnel eligible for receipt of an award as a teacher.  Administrators, other than superintendents, are eligible for receipt of awards along with principals.
