BACKGROUND:

When persons who are licensed drivers of Washington State move from the place of residence or have a change in name, they must notify the Department of Licensing in writing within ten days after the change.  They must also indicate the number of driver's licenses held and the names and addresses indicated on each.  Once received by the Department, the changes supplied by the licensed driver are entered into the Department records.

In a recent Court of Appeals case, the Department was found to be in error when sending a notice of suspension of a driver's license.  The Court of Appeals ruled that even though the Department had sent the notice to the address of record as indicated by the person's last valid driver's license,, the Department should have updated its records with new address information when citations against the individual were filed with the Department.

SUMMARY:

BILL AS AMENDED:  Changes of name or address information as shown on a driver's license or identicard must be filed on a prescribed form.  The information provided shall constitute the Department's record of name and address for mailing notices and correspondence.  These provisions are effective July 1, 1988.

AMENDED BILL COMPARED TO ORIGINAL:  An effective date is added.
