Legalizing the possession of drugs prescribed by out-of-state physicians.

SYNOPSIS AS ENACTED

BACKGROUND:

To dispense a legend drug to a patient in Washington state, the pharmacist must have a prescription written by a health practitioner licensed in Washington or in a bordering state.  Legend drugs are those drugs that cannot be dispensed by a pharmacist without a prescription.

SUMMARY:

Physicians and osteopathic physicians licensed in any state of the United States are authorized to write prescriptions for drugs that may be dispensed to patients in the state of Washington.  However, it is unlawful to fill prescriptions written by out-of-state physicians if the prescription is more than six months old.
