BACKGROUND:

Information on school facilities generally becomes available to the State Board of Education and Superintendent of Public Instruction when there is a request for state matching funds for new school construction or modernization of existing facilities.  Many school buildings within the state were originally built with local funds or existed prior to the imposition of state regulation on school construction.  There is no complete inventory of existing school facilities in the state of Washington and a description of their use and condition.

SUMMARY:

BILL AS AMENDED:  The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction shall establish and maintain an inventory of all the buildings and other structures owned by school districts.  The inventory shall provide a current picture of the facilities and shall be completed by December 31, 1988, and updated every two years.

The inventory shall be used to determine the types and trends of facility construction, describe existing major building systems, review student housing standards, forecast needs for new construction and modernization, assess the capability of buildings to install and use telecommunications and data processing equipment, and to analyze construction projects submitted by districts.

AMENDED BILL COMPARED TO ORIGINAL: The assessment of a building's capability of allowing the installation and use of data processing and telecommunications equipment is added.

Appropriation:  $500,000 to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the 1987-89 biennium.
