AN ACT Relating to the state crime laboratory; creating a new section; and providing an expiration date.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     (1) The state crime laboratory task force is created, consisting of the following six members appointed jointly by the president of the senate and the speaker of the house of representatives:

          (a) Three sheriffs or police chiefs.  In making these appointments, the president of the senate and the speaker of the house of representatives shall consider the nominations made by the Washington association of sheriffs and police chiefs; and

          (b) Three county prosecuting attorneys.  In making these appointments, the president of the senate and the speaker of the house of representatives shall consider the nominations made by the Washington association of prosecuting attorneys.

          (2) The task force shall review the operation and management of the state crime laboratory established under RCW 43.43.670 to determine:

          (a) If changes are needed in the operation of the state crime laboratory to assure that adequate services are provided to local law enforcement agencies; and

          (b) Which state agency is best suited to oversee the operation and management of the state crime laboratory.

          (3) The task force may meet at such times and places as the members may determine.  The task force may request the cooperation of other state agencies in performing its duties.

          (4) The task force shall submit a report to the governor and the legislature by January 1, 1988.  The report shall include any legislation recommended by the task force.

          (5) The task force shall cease to exist, and this section shall expire, on January 1, 1988.
