AN ACT Relating to neuroleptic drugs; adding a new section to chapter 69.41 RCW; and creating a new section.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     The legislature finds that the use of neuroleptic drugs constitute a serious risk to mentally ill or neurologically impaired patients and should be further regulated to insure that patients or their legal guardians are informed and aware of potential harmful side effects of the use of neuroleptic drugs.

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  A new section is added to chapter 69.41 RCW to read as follows:

          (1) A person who prescribes neuroleptic drugs shall have a written consent form from the patient or the patient's legal guardian.  The consent form shall attest that the patient or legal guardian has been informed about potential side effects of the use of neuroleptic drugs, including but not limited to tardive dyskinesis.

          (2) The board of pharmacy shall adopt rules to insure that neuroleptic drugs are labeled in such manner as to inform the patient of harmful side effects of the use of neuroleptic drugs.
