                            AS OF JANUARY 30, 1989

BACKGROUND:

Installers and inspectors of fire alarm and life safety systems are not certified as having expertise in installation or inspection of those systems.  Some believe that alarm systems are becoming more complex and that those who install or inspect alarms should have specific training to insure the effectiveness of these devices.

SUMMARY:

Inspectors of fire alarm and life safety systems must be certified as competent to inspect such devices.  Installers of such systems are required to obtain an endorsement on their electrician certificates of competency which indicates competency to install fire alarms and life safety systems.  The Department of Labor and Industries is to test for competency before issuing certificates or endorsements.  An approved training course must be completed before an applicant is eligible to sit for either examination.
