WHEREAS, There are five hundred eighty-nine thousand veterans in the state of Washington; and

          WHEREAS, Veterans share a common bond through their service and sacrifice to their country and to this state; and

          WHEREAS, Historically the citizens of the state of Washington have recognized the service of veterans through memorials and monuments; and

          WHEREAS, The display of the flag and campaign ribbons would further recognize and honor the service of the individual veteran;

          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the House of Representatives of the state of Washington, the Senate concurring, That the department of licensing, the Washington state patrol, and the department of veterans' affairs are directed to work with veterans' organizations in developing a method of honoring and recognizing veterans through a special remembrance addition (strip) to be affixed to vehicle license plates; and

          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the departments shall report to the legislative transportation committee by December 15, 1989, with a recommendation for a special remembrance addition (strip), with proceeds to be used for projects that pay tribute to those living veterans and those who may have died defending freedom in our nation's wars and conflicts.
