TO THE HONORABLE GEORGE BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, AND TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE AND THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, AND TO THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES, IN CONGRESS ASSEMBLED, AND TO THE UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF STATE, AND TO THE UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF COMMERCE:

          We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, respectfully represent and petition as follows:

          WHEREAS, The Japanese government subsidizes the lumber mills in Japan by paying higher prices for Pacific Northwest logs than the normal market price; and

          WHEREAS, While the state of Washington favors free trade with all nations it is clear that several nations have restrictive policies concerning our domestically processed wood products; and

          WHEREAS, Pressure for retalitory measures is increasing in this country and a trade war with those nations which import our logs would not benefit either the United States or those nations;

          NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully pray that Congress direct the Department of State and the Department of Commerce to use every method possible to create an open and free market for this nation's domestically produced wood products.

          BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately transmitted to the Honorable George Bush, President of the United States, the United States Secretary of State, the United States Secretary of Commerce, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and each member of Congress from the State of Washington.
