AN ACT Relating to school nutrition guidelines; adding a new section to Title 28A RCW; and creating a new section.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     The legislature finds that proper nutrition of children is a priority for the state and that there is a direct relationship between good nutrition and the capacity of children to develop and learn.

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  A new section is added to Title 28A RCW to read as follows:

          (1) The superintendent of public instruction shall develop nutritional guidelines for school lunches and breakfasts, and for all food and beverages sold on public school campuses.  These nutritional guidelines shall consider current recommendations for diet for children, by age level if available, established by the national research council.

          (2) The nutritional guidelines shall include guidelines for fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, and shall specify that where comparable food products of equal nutritional value are available the food product lower in fat, saturated fat, or cholesterol shall be used.

          (3) The nutritional guidelines shall be distributed to each school district by the superintendent of public instruction.
