Senate Chamber, Olympia, Wednesday, April 26, 1995

      The Senate was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by President Pritchard. No roll call was taken.

      The Sergeant at Arms Color Guard consisting of Pages Shannon Carol and Adam Inman, presented the Colors. President Pritchard offered the prayer.


MOTION


      On motion of Senator Spanel, the reading of the Journal of the previous day was dispensed with and it was approved.


MESSAGE FROM THE HOUSE

      The Speaker has signed:

MOTION


      On motion of Senator Rasmussen, the following resolution was adopted:


SENATE RESOLUTION 1995-8660


By Senators Rasmussen, Heavey, Deccio, McAuliffe, Wood, Franklin, Moyer, Cantu, Morton, Winsley, Fairley, Spanel, Gaspard, Wojahn, Snyder, Hargrove and Sheldon


      WHEREAS, On April 18, 1995, at the age of sixty-seven, Father Joseph Maguire, S.J. died, to the deep regret of the thousands of friends he had made throughout the state; and

      WHEREAS, He was ordained as a priest in the Society of Jesus, and devoted his adult life to various duties and ministries; and

      WHEREAS, Joe Maguire was born and educated in Spokane, where he graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and Gonzaga University; and

      WHEREAS, Father Maguire served the students and alumni of Seattle University for two and one-half decades as a friend, counselor, and mentor; and

      WHEREAS, He served for ten years at Bellarmine Preparatory School in Tacoma as a teacher, glee club moderator, and rector, and as a friend and counselor to students, parents, and alumni; and

      WHEREAS, His beautiful voice echoed in these chambers on numerous occasions on various songs, including the "Our Father" and "Danny Boy"; and

      WHEREAS, His memory has been honored with an endowed music scholarship fund at Bellarmine Preparatory School, a campus ministry capital fund at Seattle University, and a cherished place in the hearts of all people who heard him sing, learned from his example, and knew his fellowship; and

      WHEREAS, Thousands of Washingtonians are grateful for having been blessed with the opportunity to have known and been served by such an honorable and humble man; and

      WHEREAS, Memorial services were held in Tacoma and Spokane on Monday, April 24, 1995, to celebrate the natural life of Father Joseph Maguire;

      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the Senate of the state of Washington, that the Senate join Father Joseph Maguire's thousands of friends, brothers, and sisters in celebrating his life of service and devotion to all those he touched with his voice and his spirit.


      Senators Rasmussen, Sheldon and Winsley spoke to Senate Resolution 1995-8660.


MOTION


      At 10:12 a.m., on motion of Senator Spanel, the Senate was declared to be at ease.


      The Senate was called to order at 2:13 p.m. by President Pritchard.



MOTION


      At 2:13 p.m., on motion of Senator Sellar, the Senate adjourned until 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 27, 1995.
