REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT

President Owen: “Senator Jayapal, the President would note that whoever advised you that this would not constitute your first speech might confer with the President in the future. The President believes that it had all of the components of a profound and thought-provoking message. And the President would further remind you, Senator Jayapal, that to maybe do a little checking on who advises you in the future. And further, that it is the custom of the senate to be compensated, having to tolerate your long, albeit thoughtful, speech in the future. I will leave it to the senate and your colleagues to decide whether it qualifies as your first speech. I, however, I would say it does.”
