Car top railings for hydraulic elevators.

A standard railing shall be installed on the top of hydraulic elevators installed in unenclosed hoistways. The railing shall be substantially constructed of metal and shall consist of a top rail, intermediate rail and post. The top rail shall have a smooth surface and, the upper surface shall be located at a vertical height of 42 in. plus or minus 3 in. The intermediate rail shall be located approximately halfway between the top rail and the car top. There shall be a minimum of 6 in. of clearance above the top rail when the car is at its furthest point of travel on the mechanical stop. If the vertical clearance of 6 in. cannot be achieved, do not install car top railing, instead provide signage required by WAC 296-96-23119.
