Background:
In 2007, the Legislature authorized a public-private partnership to create and implement the
Washington State Leadership Academy (Academy) to develop and enhance leadership and
effective practices and skills for school and district administrators. The Academy will develop a
program that includes a curriculum, courses, practicum, mentoring, and evaluation. The
Academy partners include the state superintendent and principal associations, institutions of
higher education, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and others. The
Legislature appropriated $1.3 million to support the Academy.
An Executive Director for the Academy was hired in November, and the Academy has received
a matching grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support its work.
Summary of Bill:
Training and topics pertaining to school director leadership are included in the Washington State
Leadership Academy. The Washington State School Directors' Association is added as an
Academy partner.
Appropriation: None.
Fiscal Note: Not requested.
Effective Date: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
