Background:

State law sets the maximum allowable lengths of front and rear vehicle protrusions. With respect to protrusions in front of the vehicle, no load or part of the vehicle may extend more than 3 feet beyond the front wheels of such vehicle, or front bumper, if equipped with a front bumper. An exemption to the front protrusion limit is provided to front-loading garbage and recycling trucks while in service at speeds of 20 miles per hour or less.

Summary:

Public transit vehicles equipped with a bike rack are exempt from the 3-foot limit for front vehicle protrusions.
