Background: Matthew E. Schlimme served as a Machinery Technician Third Class in the United States Coast Guard from 1993 until his death in 1997. He was stationed in New Jersey, Iowa, and La Push, Washington. He died on February 12, 1997, while participating in a rescue operation near the mouth of the Quillayute River. Petty Officer Schlimme was awarded the Coast Guard Medal posthumously.
Summary of Joint Memorial: The Legislature requests that the United States Coast Guard name a Coast Guard cutter in honor of Petty Officer Schlimme.

Staff Summary of Public Testimony (State Government, Tribal Relations & Elections): PRO: Matthew showed extraordinary heroism in responding to a call that a sailboat lost its mast and was floundering in 25 foot seas. He was awarded the Coast Guard Medal, and hopefully the Coast Guard will consider this request. He had a bright future ahead of him, and then was gone.
