WHEREAS, The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an incredible burden on the people of Washington state, both through the loss of loved ones and through financial hardship; and
WHEREAS, The economic impacts of COVID-19 have created vulnerability and the need for support in many working families in our state; and
WHEREAS, Community support and generous assistance can be a line of support, hope, and safety for vulnerable populations; and
WHEREAS, Washington Kids in Transition (WAKIT) is a group that works in Edmonds, WA to provide support to income-eligible Edmonds families; and
WHEREAS, WAKIT assists residents who have children in the Edmonds School District, providing housing and basic living assistance; and
WHEREAS, As part of the City of Edmonds Housing and Supplementary Relief Program WAKIT distributed more than $215,000 to qualifying Edmonds School District families; and
WHEREAS, Their good work has been further validated by the recent award of a $129,000 Student Learning Support Grant from the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI); and
WHEREAS, WAKIT is also a supporter of the Edmonds Hub (E-Hub), which provides access to meals, stable technology, tutoring, educational support materials, and access to laundry services, all for students and families who qualify for McKinney-Vento and foster care; and
WHEREAS, WAKIT has gone above and beyond to ensure that our most vulnerable children and families are able to safely receive extra care and support during these difficult times;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State Senate recognize Washington Kids in Transition for the generosity, support, and assistance they provide to their community.
