Washington state agencies invite you to review informational materials and attend a 6PPD webinar to learn more about our work addressing 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone.

In 2020, researchers at the University of Washington-Tacoma, Washington State University, and additional collaborators identified the connection between car tires, 6PPD-quinone, and prespawn mortality in coho salmon. In response to this discovery, Washington state is taking action to protect humans and aquatic organisms from these chemicals.

We invite you to attend our upcoming 6PPD webinar to learn more about our work addressing 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone.

Agencies across the state have prepared materials to get you up-to-speed. You can review these materials before the live virtual event, then submit your questions using our comment form. We will respond to as many questions as possible during the live event.

6PPD Background: 6PPD prevents cracking and blowouts in tires. As 6PPD performs these functions, it reacts with ozone in the environment and creates a transformation product called 6PPD-quinone. Unfortunately, 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone are highly toxic to some species of aquatic life; tiny amounts of 6PPD-quinone can kill coho salmon before they're able to spawn.
