Title or Subject: Medicaid State Plan Amendment (SPA) 24-0020 Pharmacy Update - Drug Shortage(s).

Effective Date: April 1, 2024.

Description: The health care authority (HCA) intends to submit SPA 24-0020 to add the following information to the medicaid state plan regarding coverage of prescribed drugs during a drug shortage:

Drug Shortages. Prescribed drugs that are not covered outpatient drugs (including drugs authorized for import by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)) are covered when medically necessary during drug shortages identified by at least one of the following:

1. The United States FDA.

2. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

SPA 24-0020 is anticipated to have no effect on the annual aggregate expenditure/reimbursement/payment related to the coverage of prescribed drugs that are not covered outpatient drugs.

A copy of SPA 24-0020 is available for review. HCA would appreciate any input or concerns regarding this SPA.
