Background:  Statute directs the Washington State Patrol to provide security and protection for the governor and the governor's family.  The governor-elect also receives this protection after the November election.

In practice, the State Patrol has also been providing this service to the lieutenant governor.  The 1990 supplemental budget included an appropriation to pay for the provision of protective services for the lieutenant governor.

Summary of Bill:  Statute directs the State Patrol to provide security and protection for the lieutenant governor in addition to the governor and the governor's family.

Effective Date:  Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.

Testimony For:  The bill legitimizes an activity that has gone on for a number of years.  It is appropriate for the State Patrol to protect the lieutenant governor.
