                                 C 86 L 91

                            Synopsis As Enacted

Brief Description:  Revising provisions for the screening program for scoliosis.

By Representatives Peery, Cole, G. Fisher, Betrozoff, Miller and Jacobsen; by request of Board of Health.

House Committee on Health Care

Senate Committee on Education

Background:  State law prescribes the school grades in which students must be screened for scoliosis, although the State Board of Health determines other aspects of the screening program by rule.  The current requirement of screening students in grades five through 10 may not be necessary or may not be the most efficient use of resources.

Summary:  Statutory references to yearly scoliosis screening of high risk children in school grades five through 10 are deleted.  Scoliosis screening is required at least three times between grades four and 10.

The State Board of Health is required to adopt rules in cooperation with the Department of Health and the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Current law which provided for screening waivers in the ninth and 10th gradesis repealed.
